You just never know when you’ll need to land

Editor,

The following is an actual incident that occurred Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018. The location was Carroll County Airport, Berryville, Ark., Airport designator K4M1.

At approximately 2 p.m., a male pilot and his wife were enroute to Springfield, Mo., when their aircraft encountered unforecasted icing conditions. At the same time, visibility on the ground was deteriorating very rapidly due to freezing rain and sleet. Winds were gusting over 40 mph.

As ice began accumulating on the aircraft, with an iced over windshield, the pilot made a life saving decision to land at Carroll County Airport. As the aircraft was being secured, visibility dropped to less than one-half mile in blowing sleet.

The couple elected to use the airport courtesy car and spent the blustery night in a town very nearby. Because this airport was open, and the pilot and his wife made the right decision, this was a non-incident.
