This Week’s Independent Thinker

OK, we all know that the sub-atoms in our bodies are those little scamps we should talk to because they’re like a source of our personal electricity. They’re smaller than unsplittable atoms but they supply our atoms, molecules and cells with energy. Of course we knew that and surely that’s enough.

Then Francis Halzen, from Tienen, Belgium and the University of Wisconsin, found something even smaller, neutrinos. Billions of neutrinos pass through our bodies every second, making them the most abundant particles in the universe. They have no electrical charge, they leave no trace in us, and they’re considered accelerators, so they’re extremely energetic. They travel through stars and galaxies. They’re peculiar and probably vital.

Dr. Halzen detected the neutrinos by providing them with their personal Eden, underneath the South Pole where the ice is clear. They were happy and lit up for him.

This discovery allows humans more information about life in our cosmos than we ever considered. We have no idea what Dr. Halzen actually did, but it sounds way more promising than rain or world peace.
