The Times, They Are A-changin’

As are we.

The Eureka Springs Independent staff knocked heads together over the holidays and settled on a new way to do business. January 14 is the beginning of a grammatically daunting but physically relieving change.

Bi-weekly? That means either occurring every two weeks or twice a week.

Bi-monthly? That means occurring twice a month or once every two months.

Two dissimilar definitions for each hyphenated phrase. Bicentennial is every two-hundredth anniversary. Bicycle is two wheels. Binocular means two eyes. But bi-weekly or bi-monthly is indeterminate according to the words bible, Oxford English Dictionary.

Semi-weekly is just wrong. Sounds like a big truck with shaky axles.

We are changing from a weekly newspaper to a fortnightly newspaper because we like the word fortnightly. And because new projects are causing exhilaration. We’ll maintain the same staff, same office, same hours, same newspaper and same Ozark Mountains Fun Guide. We’re simply refashioning from only a newspaper to including other publishing ventures.

This means that the next ESI will come out Jan. 28. The one after that will be Feb. 11, etc. Every other week.

Bob Dylan was so right – change is inevitable and powerful.
