The Pursuit of Happiness

You’ve heard the expression “offering an opinion is like peeing on yourself inside a blue serge suit. It feels warm and no one knows you’ve done it.” A barge-sized body of scientific evidence confirms the expression as fact.

This evidence conclusively shows that neither political conservatives – nor their liberal opposites – are easily persuaded to change beliefs or opinions no matter how much empirical evidence shows their opinions and beliefs are wrong.

Climate change and global warming deniers are cases in point. They reside within the same Magical-Thinking Asylum as deniers of the theory of evolution. To someone who believes the world is 9,000 years old, there is no quantity of fact-burdened reality that will get them to change their mind. “Evolution is a theory of evolution!” they shriek. “A theory is only the wild pipe dream of elitist Libtards!”

It does no good to point out that there is Music Theory and actual music, and a Theory of Large Numbers and really big numbers. If your worldview depends on the earth being 9,000 years old then, by God, there is no such thing as music or large numbers. They’ll tell you to stick the Paleoarchean Era right up your wazoo.

Liberals are not exempt. By example, virtually all literature focused on client-based outcomes concludes that Community Action Agency Programs are a vast waste of money, and most social science literature points to CAAPs as a core contributor to the decline of African American communities. Yet, we’ve funded them to the tune of $400 to $700 million dollars a year since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. Why? I rack it up to the Liberal’s lust for supervision – but you undoubtedly have another opinion (not that anyone cares).

Not caring about another’s opinions and the facts that go with them characterize the culture of our legislative bodies right now. Congressional and State Legislators ignore facts about deficits, climate change, Supreme Court nominees – and everything else – in favor of argument winning sound bites, lies, propaganda, and perception-based voodoo on behalf of no one but fantasy-chained True Believers. It makes me want to holler.

Well, that was fun. I feel warm all over.

  1. I just crossed you off my list of potential prom dates, if you are still wearing blue serge suits. Not to mention peeing inside them. Dump those CAAPs monies into early childhood education and youth job intern/mentor programs. And send those science deniers back to the preschool, while you’re at it.
