The basement floor of The Aud may need just one more session of restoration. The floor has already benefitted from other work sessions, as Main Street Eureka Springs and members of the community have partnered on the project. A summertime workshop is planned for June 25-28, and volunteers are needed to carry out the work. Anyone interested can contact Main Street Eureka Springs or Cassie Dishman, director of Planning and Community Development at city hall. At the May 6 meeting of the Historic District Commission, Dishman said a donation had just come in to pay for more supplies.
Dishman explained that volunteers do not have to commit to the entire weekend, and they can work just as many hours as they want. She also said that May is preservation month, and anyone interested in learning more about historic preservation can contact her or any of the commissioners.
The HDC had several applications to consider, and all were approved with little discussion. At 95 Wall St., a plan to replace temporary siding with permanent wood siding was approved for Julia Boyer. The house was built in 1970 and is considered non-contributing.
A Level III request was approved for Ethan and David Avanzino at 269 N. Main St. The approval will allow the construction of a wooden platform five feet by 22 feet on the front of the house. The approval also includes removable wooden covers for a gas meter and an air-conditioning unit.
At 304 Spring St., owner Stan Dubois asked to revise a previous Certificate of Appropriateness, which had been approved last November. The new plan featured the same new pavilion, but it will no longer be attached to the existing house. Commissioner Dee Bright said the house is contributing, and a detached addition would better preserve that historical status.
At 227 Dairy Hollow Rd., Hannah Maufe received approval for a wooden storage building with a metal roof behind the house. Construction had already begun on the building.
The agenda also included a list of 15 administrative approvals, and Chair Debbie Davis said, “It’s good to see people fixing their homes this time of year.”
The HDC will next meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. Level III applications were due May 7, and Level II applications were due May 13.
