Shooting for the future

On June 27, a couple of legendary events combined in Berryville to raise funds for the Carroll County Historical Society’s community room refurbishment.

Out at the 2026 National Muzzle Rifle Loading Association’s Rifle and Pistol Territorial Championship on the Luther Owens Shooting Range, the famous Check’s burgers (yes, the original recipe containing crackers but missing the historic cigarette ash) made a reappearance as the ReChecks Burgers fundraiser.

It was a rousing success, according to Society President Starlene Lee: “We sold out and made a nice profit. Thank you to everyone who came out and bought a burger and thank you to our volunteers who worked this event!”

For the uninitiated, Lee explained a bit of Check’s legend. Check’s Burgers were introduced in 1913 when hamburger meat wasn’t very robust, so crackers were added as filler. Later, many old timers remembered a cook who apparently chain smoked over the skillet, as the burgers were often served sporting a clump of fallen ash.

Nonetheless, Check’s became known far and wide for its unforgettable burgers and chili and remained popular until the doors closed in 1997, also closing a chapter in Berryville history that magically reopens now and then for special events.

And it might happen again.

Honoring the Past and Shooting for the Future, the 71st Saunders Memorial Muzzle Loading Match will take place from Sept. 24 – 27 at the Luther Owens Loading Range and Park.

The event is being organized by Luther’s Long Hunters. Food and other vendors are being sought along with Saturday night entertainment and activities to supplement the gatherings.

The park has restrooms, showers and camping spots, so there will be people on the grounds to sell to, feed, and/or entertain all weekend.
