Peaceful protests expanding

Indivisible Eureka held a protest Saturday afternoon at the courthouse in downtown Eureka Springs, the second of three scheduled protests.

Some shop owners displayed signs reading “Closed for protests from 1-3” on their doors.

Two movements merged into one as Earth Warriors Empowered joined Indivisible.

The protest encompassed all age groups, and an agenda of multiple concerns funneled into the protection of American constitutional rights. Artists, politicians, business owners and citizens protested alongside one another.

“I’d like to see at least ten percent of our nation protesting every couple weeks until something happens,” artist and Yoga instructor Robin Bray said. “This form of resistance is achieving newspaper coverage.”

John Rankine was in fatigues and combat boots with his nails painted black and a shirt that said, “Jesus protects me and loves me, the Christian right does neither.” Protesters from as far as Alaska participated.

“Hands off our libraries. Hands off our free speech. Hands off our forests. Hands off our constitutional rights. Hands off our social security,” Rankine said.

The protest was held in conjunction with 50501, a grassroots political organization aspiring to 50 Protests, 50 States, 1 Movement. The first protest April 5 at the courthouse drew roughly 100 people. This protest had more than 150 participants.

Chants of This is What Democracy Looks like, Due Process for All, and Whose Streets Our Streets filled Main Street.

Signs that read Jesus Loves All, There is no Planet B, The World Needs You to give a Shift, I Love Due Process, Free Speech Includes Protests and It’s Horrifying I have to Fight My Government to Protect My Environment were prominent.

The next protest is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, International Worker’s Day. May Day is observed worldwide, including in France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Mexico, China, Vietnam, Cuba and former Soviet Union countries, dedicated to workers’ rights and springtime fertility.
