The Mennonite Disaster Service has grown into an important resource for Carroll County and the surrounding area. At any hour of night or day, the MDS volunteers respond to search and rescue situations, especially those involving water rescues or recoveries. On Friday, May 15, the community will have an opportunity to help support the MDS while enjoying a pulled-pork dinner.
The MDS receives a small stipend from the county, similar to rural volunteer fire departments. Most of their financial support comes from fundraisers and donations, and the MDS has acquired specialized tools for search and rescues. They have an air boat and a jet boat, and those boats can navigate shallow creeks and rivers. MDS volunteers use sonar and dive teams in their search efforts.
Mike McKelvey, director of the Department of Emergency Management, said, “They make a huge difference. It’s a big blessing to have them around.” McKelvey pointed out that the MDS serves a large area of the state, including taking part in a search for a drowning victim in Bull Shoals Lake the previous weekend.
County Judge David Writer said, “It’s wonderful what they do, and the way they give back to the community.” Writer explained that the MDS also provides volunteers to serve as first responders for the Berryville Fire Department.
Ted Hostetler said the MDS began in 2010, and it has grown steadily. In addition to the specialized watercraft, the MDS also has drones, including an underwater drone. They have been certified for swift-water rescues.
The Mennonite School is located at 849 Carroll Road 601, just outside of Berryville. The dinner will include homemade bread and pies, and begins at 5 p.m. with an auction at 7 p.m. Donations may be sent to the MDS at 1063 CR 708 in Berryville, 72616.
