We were sitting out back watching clothes dry on the line last weekend when my neighbor said softly, “When people believe that buying more and more of anything is the ticket to happiness it could be time to find a mirror and look into it. Or buy a mirror and look into it.”

What she was talking about is speculative, not solid. Sometimes when nature is quiet and the sun is dry cleaning our work clothes, words generate quiet, free power. We wanted to stay in this legally unconscious trance but decided to disturb it. She had the invisible microphone.

“If nothing else, this impeachment inquiry is revealing greed and seduction on levels we never imagined.”

No argument there. I knew Trump to be somewhere between a grifter and a brigand in a long, red necktie that I assumed he wore while showering. He doesn’t care what the truth is or how to tell it. Yet he is exposing the whole charade of those who believe that if they keep cheating, stealing and committing adultery they will magically get on the express lane to heaven because they deserve it. Or they’ll say they bought heaven and we’re not welcome.

“Doesn’t it seem that since Y2-K everything has gotten darker? More sinister? Meaner? Or is it just me?”

“It’s just you. Who’s your favorite white guy in the Bible?”

“I like that it’s trendy to not be on Facebook, not posting pictures, not shopping at amazon.com, and not doing anything the way we did nineteen years ago. Our sudden respect for living things strikes me as a sign of competence. Women’s economic peril, guns being more valuable than lives, and boiling ocean water in the Bering Sea kind of set the tone for making daring decisions.”

“Our president, elected fairly or not, did have a career in… in… something financial? Real estate? Casinos? Writing? Manipulation?”

“Doesn’t matter. Look at Ukraine. Their president is forty-one years old, five-foot-seven, and a professional comedian, or was until five months ago. So it really doesn’t make a hoot who’s in charge, just so we stay confused and keep accumulating.

“Really? No white guys in the Bible? Isn’t that internationally vital information?
