Independent Guestatorial: 2001 – A Lying Odyssey

852

Most of us knew well before the release of Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury that the president was “like a child,” a “moron,” an “idiot” (I left out the expletives).

The book, destined to be the best selling non-fiction book of all time, revealed very little new information for anyone paying attention.

While Trump’s competence for doing the job may still be in question (he did correctly identify the rhinoceros), there is no question or doubt that our president is a chronic liar.

The Washington Post, which has painstakingly chronicled all of Trump’s lies and misleading statements since his time in office, recently reported that the president committed 2,001 lies since the “biggest presidential inaugural celebration in American history.” That’s a shocking 5.6 pieces of misinformation or alternative facts spewed every day. But what’s more astounding is the fact not one Republican has called Trump on any of these lies, or that his “base” gives a rat’s ass about any of it.

The sheer volume seems to have overwhelmed and discombobulated the press. Trump has taken a page from the Hitler/Goebbels “Big Lie” playbook, where “if a lie is repeated often enough it becomes the truth,” as evidenced by the still faithful who believe Mexico is going to pay for that wall, that Mueller and the FBI are on the biggest partisan witch hunt ever, and they live in the highest taxed nation on the planet.

And then there’s Fox News, aka Trump TV, where talking heads perpetuate and spread Trump’s vile untruths. The Hannitys, Coulters, Limbaughs, Joneses and Fox morning-bimbos-of-all-genders are all part of the Trump propaganda machine.

When a reporter can slip a question in, the answer is always “It’s just more Fake News, folks” before making a quick exit. Oft repeated statements like “There is no collusion,” “I’m the least racist person,” and “Believe me” are obvious examples the Trump doth protest too much.

In this #me-too climate where Hollywood moguls, actors and politicians have been taken down and erased, it’s astounding that the man who holds the country’s highest office can be caught on tape bragging about molesting women, be accused by 16 women of sexual misconduct, throw support to Roy Moore, and have sex with a porn star, paying her hush money a month before the election, and still be cheered on by some Republican women and his conservative, Christian, family-values base.

Imagine the field day Trump TV would have if just one of these accusations involved a Democratic president?

It’s amazing that anyone could believe the phony religiosity of this serial adulterer, scamming con artist, narcissistic, infantile racist bully and pathological liar. What will it take for them to realize that indeed he drained the swamp, only to have it restocked with even slimier bottom feeders?

Is this the Reality TV they bargained for, and how can anyone believe anything coming out of this presidents mouth?

Bill Clinton prosecutor Kenneth Starr stated this week that Trump should be impeached if indeed he lied about trying to fire Mueller by calling it fake news, “I take lying to the American people very, very seriously, so absolutely,” Starr said.

What Starr didn’t address was the other 2000 lies told to the American people.

Whatever happened to truth, justice and the American way?

  1. My sentiment exactly. It is astounding to see Republicans cheer him on. Midterms may be our way out of this insanity. Thank you for caring. I hope we all continue to stay awake.
