Improvement budget at Holiday Island taking a hit

315

The Holiday Island Suburban Improvement District met, Sept. 16 where all members were present except David Makidon.

HISID Manager Lawrence Blood provided new options for trimming down the 2020 capital improvements budget, saying the budget needed to be reduced from $1.35 million to $750,000.

The board provided Blood with feedback analyzing their options and pushing certain projects to later years. Roads and water wells were held as a priority, but various building remodels were deferred.

Several particularly costly improvements to the marina were deferred to a later year, including replacement of Dock Two, totaling $340,000.

CCSO report

Cpl. Aaron Ingle of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office provided an activity report indicating that in July and August his office responded to 191 and 162 calls respectively. Those calls included breaking & entering, harassment, residential burglary, and car theft.

Ingle said that more than 10 calls were for domestic battery, which he described as a result of the holidays saying that people who are coming together for a holiday who have not spent much time together can get into fights. Ingle described examples of domestic battery as conflicts between brothers, roommates, ex-spouses, or spouses.

Car accidents increased as well, he said, due to the slick, curvy roads during rainy weather.

Speed bumps denied

Chair Linda Graves addressed the idea of installing metal speed bumps to Holiday Island Drive to help with the problem of speeding on one of the main thoroughfares. The board decided against it for two reasons: 1) It would impede on ambulance services and 2) because of how long the street is, a couple of speed bumps would not deter speeding for its entire length.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 21.
