HDC OKs garage construction

Even though the Historic District Commission meeting scheduled for July 1 had been cancelled, the agenda for the July 15 meeting included only one application.

Shaman Hill represented a proposal from Gary Stokes to build a new garage at 38 Mountain St. The house dates to 1906 and is considered contributing. During the discussion, Director of Planning and Community Development Cassie Dishman noted that the Board of Zoning Adjustment had granted a variance from side-setback requirements for the project at a meeting the previous night. Dishman serves as staff to the HDC and BOZA.

Dishman also said that no negative responses were received from neighbors who received letters about the project, and the garage would be located at the rear of the property. A bare quorum of four votes approved the project.

Commissioner Dee Bright reported on continuing efforts to refinish the floor in the basement of The Aud. She said the floor will require two more sessions to complete. Bright also mentioned the Run Unicorn Run, scheduled for Sept. 20. That event will benefit Main Street Eureka Springs.

The HDC will next meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Level III applications were due July 22, and Level II applications are due July 29.
