With pace and aplomb, the Historic District Commission approved four applications at its Nov. 16 meeting. The only item causing debate was Chris Fischer’s request to change the facia and guttering at 33 Ridgeway. Fischer said the structure’s convoluted system for delivering runoff from the roof was due for a “fairly dramatic repair.” The soffit had given way, rainwater no longer made it to the downspout, and a carpenter had discovered significant damage underneath. Fischer wanted to extend the roof decking a bit so he could “comfortably repair my gutter system.”
Commissioner Virgil Fowler asked if the gutter as it was could be repaired, as guidelines call for gutters to be repaired if possible. Fisher acknowledged it was possible but “the damage is getting away from us.” He added such a repair would only set up the same difficulty for someone else down the line.
Commissioner Melissa Greene commented she would hate to lose a feature such as the gutters but worse would be to lose the house.
Vote to approve the application was 4-1, Fowler voting No.
These applications were also approved:
- 14 White – revise previously approved application for new door cut; add rear steps and deck
- 61 Mountain – replace lower level door
- 43 Alexander – new construction: garage with apartment above
These two items on the Consent Agenda were approved:
- 35 Benton – new paint colors
- 35B N. Main – new sign
Consent Agenda items are Level I applications that the City Preservation Officer believes to be in accordance with the design guidelines.
Chair Dee Bright presented these three Administrative Approvals, applications for repair or work involving no changes in materials or color but which include changes in roofing color:
- 23 Hillside – re-roof
- 49 Benton – add stub wall for footing; repair siding
- 5 Rogers Alley – re-roof
Bright also announced that commissioner Doug Breitling had resigned his HDC seat after 10 years of distinguished service. He will instead sit on the Planning Commission.
Next meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m.
