All I have heard about this is week is Crappie, crappie, crappie… Most anglers find crappie near shoreline cedar trees, blowdowns, stickups, and weed beds.

Larger crappie may be further out over shallow, main-lake humps or near channel edges adjacent to shallow flats. During cold fronts, crappie may leave shallows for deeper water.

Actually, two species of crappie exist, the white crappie and the black crappie. Both are often found and caught together in the same waters. Both species eat insects, insect larvae, grass, and any small fish.

White crappie especially preys on minnows and other fish, including their own young. The best lures to use for crappie are small jigs.

Crappie are also known as the Strawberry Bass, speckled bass (“specks”), calico bass, papermouth, and sauc-au-lait (translation “bag of milk”).

This picture was provided by my friend Popeye. He didn`t take me along but I was given some nice fillets. I`m going next time to feel that thump.

The best way to get some of these fish in your pan is to watch the fishing report from Fish`n Chums on Facebook. Ozark fishing report big winter crappie.
