Dropping a Line

Was thinking this is the time of year to share the fish spawning chart with you again since our water temps are now in the mid to upper 50s the fish are getting pretty active. Walleye have already spawned and are now still in the creeks and rivers feeding heavy. White bass are still moving up the creeks and rivers and should be pretty easy to catch in these locations all the way into May.

Spoonbill are in the Beaver tailwaters wanting to lay their eggs as close to the dam as they can get. You can legally snag them from the sign that says you can’t get closer to the dam downstream to the first boat launch. You will need a big rod and reel spooled with at least 30-pound line with a big treble hook and a 6 oz. weight to do this. Use a old spark plug if you have to since lead is so high.

Also, if you snag a legal trout you have to keep it, and if you snag 2 trout you are done for the day. Bring a light rod with you so if you want you can always switch over to fish for trout, white bass or walleye since all are in the river now.

In the main lakes, crappie are close to the shoreline near the brush. You just have to find the right brush. Look for bass to be laying on the flats where the water is warmer from the sun. They will be also moving close to the shoreline as the water warms closer to their spawning temps. Anything that looks like a minnow can catch all these fish except for spoonbill. Worms and powerboat will work best on trout.

We are lucky we live where we do. I am proud of our little town for how most all have shut down due to this virus even though it saddens me to drive through downtown now. Our Market Place store did not open with the dogwoods and won’t open till it is safe to do so. I am also not taking out guide trips till further notice. Yes, it is sad but we have to think of others before ourselves now more than ever before.

On a good note that sadness goes away and all seems normal when I am on the water or shoreline, when I am planting in the garden or walking in the woods looking for mushrooms. It is all still their and not affected by this for us all. Well, I better go for now and work on a chicken pen, got me some baby chicks to play with. If you hear a wolf holler at 8 p.m. holler back it might be me. Be safe my friends.
