Dropping a Line

April the 1st and I did my first spring mowing yesterday. Wow folks, it’s spring.

Went out myself for some shoreline fishing up a creek. Whites were caught the evening before, but 4 others who were there the evening before did not catch any on Monday morning. Oh well, it was just great to get out and take it all in. I did get me a little serenity that I released with a lesson learned, maybe.

The rain and water temp has the white bass moving up into the current in our creeks and rivers, you just have to go see and if they’re moving, for you can sure catch a mess of them. Crappie are up in the brush now. Look in water 4 – 8 ft. deep. I do like my minnows on a float over jigs, but both will catch.

Spoonbill season opens below Beaver Dam in 15 days. Now there’s some fishing. My biggest fish ever caught was below the dam weighing 74 lbs., and had a friend get a 102.

I will be there this year trying again, for that’s a fish that will put meat in your freezer. Striper can do that, too. With a limit of three, I have put close to a 100 pounds in the boat before.

Look for them along with the whites holding above the mudline near Prairie Creek and above it as far as you can go up the War Eagle and White River arms on Beaver Lake. If you want to stay closer to home, you can also catch both on this end of the lake that got their directions mixed up and laid eggs on the lakeside of the dam. Throwing a crankbait off the day use side has caught many fish this time of year.

This is a great time to fish. Just you and the tranquility is so refreshing, seeing it all as the birds sing. You will feel the peace even if you don’t bring any meat home. Take the ones you are staying in with, or use fishing for an excuse to get away from.

Help a neighbor. It would sure be nice if we could trust like in the old days when my Grandpa sold vegetables on the side of the road in Viola, Mo., with a tackle box holding $20 worth of change so people helped their self and no one stole a thing except the hippie hitchhiking that stole a tomato and took off running. Grandpa did not mind, for he knew he must of been hungry.

Just a thought to leave you with. It’s time to show some love and care for others. Take care.
