Dropping a Line

Johnny Glantz had a good trip this week down at Prairie Creek on Beaver Lake. 13-year-old Branton Ross and Bryan Harvey from Rogers caught a mix of fish. These are some big bass and the best pic, so I left out the big 32-in. striper, and a nice catfish to boot.

All fish were caught around that 30-ft. mark on big shiners.

When the waters cool like this, most bait and fish will stack up along the bluffs. The mouths of the major creeks and main lake with rock ledges facing north will hold warmer water.

Just put bait down to them and watch those rods – something should go down.

Here at Holiday Island we have big winter bass, too. Look in the same areas and you should find some bass along with maybe a crappie or two. If you’re wanting walleye now, look off the flats around the Island, there’s always a few hanging out the flat that goes from Cedar Creek to the old Beavertown train bridge.

My next best spot going upriver is after going under the Golden Gate. I like trolling the inside bend across from Butler Creek, next to the little island to the next point going south.

After that you have the washboard on up. Also known as the Sycamores or the Grey House. Fish this all the way past Cows Creek after the right bend.

Next good spot is after the last left bend to Houseman Access. Two nice little gravel bars here the white bass and walleye both like to spawn on and they’re up that way now. If you can, go upriver further and go for it because walleye are being caught all the way up to the dam now so that gives you bank fishermen a good chance to catch those.

Make sure you have a trout stamp along with your trout license if you’re fishing upriver past the Houseman sign or if you keep any trout on these waters.

Well that’s the river lesson, hope someone gets to eat some walleye this week. Stay warm as will I.
