Dropping a Line

Spring is on the way with days getting longer, and fish want to run up the river. Been busy this week at the store so I missed my three warm days on the water. Thought for a pic this week, since it’s a new year with spring spawns coming, here’s one of my best sunsets from last year I call the doorway view from Beaver Lake chasing those stripers upriver last year. Will try for another very soon.

Well, the talk this week is water. We have a lot of water moving so we have current, and that’s where the walleye, stripers, white bass and spoonbill like to spawn. We all know the trout live in the tailwaters, but the time to share the water with others has arrived with the walleye already being caught as far up as they can go.

White bass are also being caught behind them in the deeper waters from Holiday Island to up past Beavertown. If you’re up in the current throw some weight that will stay down like a rooster tail, small spoon in a gold, copper color.

If in the deeper water near the Island, go for silver if shad are present. Crankbaits and trout magnets are also catching fish in the river.

Striped bass are being caught from the Prairie Creek area all the way up to Point 12 where the War Eagle and White River come together, feeding the start of Beaver Lake. They will be holding deeper with this new cold front so dress warm and put on some weight with a shad or big shiner on the hook close to 30 ft. deep and move slow with your troll.

Well, that’s it for this week. Spring is near with warmer weather, the store will be open and I will be back with my new boat in the water.

Oh, by the way, the walleye will spawn on the next full moon. Some might try January 26, others might go for it February 19. They will be very active before and after, so a shoreline fisherman or woman will have a very good chance of hooking one anywhere below Beaver Dam.
