Dropping a Line

She got 2 and he got 1, but both had lots of fun.

James and Angela Schwartz from Olathe, Kansas, had a good day Sunday. I do admire a man who puts his wife first. Especially when she’s busy trying to get a pic of a big gar we’re not about to bring in the boat and a rod goes down hard and he says, “Get this one honey, it’s running like a striper.”

Unlike the son I had to push aside a few years back to let his Mom catch a fish on Mother’s Day. I let him have the first, but come on dude, it’s Mother’s Day.

That was then, this is now so here we go. We started out at 7 a.m. fogged in at the dam with hopes that it would be clearer on the other side of Point 1 Island, which it usually is because the dam fogs over more lifting up from the colder water from the river side of the dam.

With the lake water temp about 68°, we knew we needed to go south where most have been catching in the Rocky Branch area. With the help of GPS, we slowly made it across and through the gap of the island to see clear skies ahead, so we hit the throttle and found our fish.

The bass and striper both were hitting good on our freelining baits in the morning, then about noon we were marking the bait and fish closer to 30 feet deep. We caught the gar freelining, then the biggest striper of the day hit at 30. We added weight to a couple more rods and tried for a fourth fish but their feeding time was over and we were ready for ours, so we called it a day.

Here at the Island were still liking the creeks best for crappie and bass since they were the first to clear after all that rain. Walleye are in the creeks and off the flats in the lake. Look for all from the surface down to 14 feet deep. Summer is over, so fish are putting on their feedbags.

We’re catching with more days open than booked, so get out if you can or give us a call and don’t forget the wife. She might outfish you, but I bet she will cook what she catches and share with you with a smile. Enjoy the Fall colors and don’t forget to turn your clocks back Saturday.
