Dropping a Line

Bret Bray from Russellville, Ark., with a nice striped bass we got to the boat last Friday. We dropped the weights and started catching freelining. They are on the move.

Best places to fish for stripers on Beaver Lake now will be between Point 5 and Prairie Creek, and the Hwy. 12 bridge outside of Rogers – we do have some residential fish that stay up on our end of the lake through winter but most the bait moves south so a lot of fish go that way, too. You do have good thing at this end of the lake, and that is the clearer water helps the birds see the bait when it moves to the top.

So if you see a flock of gull looking birds on the water, watch them close. If they’re sitting there are probably stripers in that area, if they’re just flying then they’re looking, if they’re swooping down and hitting the water get on them fast and quiet. You could get on some top water action, that would be fun.

Went out this week here at Holiday Island. Had a lot of bait in the creeks. We caught a mix of white bass, Kentucky bass and a small walleye trolling flicker shad between 6 and 11 feet deep. Then went out and netted a 25-inch walleye on the flats before Beavertown.

We didn’t catch any crappie, so that means look for them closer to the shoreline near the brush or higher in the water in the deep standing timber.

Well that’s about it for this week. Water temp is in the mid-60s now. It’s a great time to fish since you can get about all species to come to the surface now, or right below it. If you can’t get out on your own, just give us a call and we will see what we can do. Enjoy the colors, they’re on the way.
