Dropping a Line

So far today, Tuesday, we’ve got an 18-in. smallmouth, a smaller smallmouth, a spotted bass and a striper, all caught about 18 ft. deep off the flats on Beaver Lake.

Then the wind picked up and the bite turned off, so what we got in the live well was it for the day.

Water temp was up to 74° so we’re starting to add weights as the sun gets higher, but we’re still catching stripers and bass freelining with no weights.

Speaking of bass, it’s time for them to lay their eggs now. Look for them being on their nest in the pea gravel off the shoreline.

The crappie spawn is about over but they can still be found off the shoreline brush about 4 – 8 foot deep. Perch are starting to move closer to the banks, also. A kid with a worm and bobber is still the best way to catch them and also the best way to teach a child to fish.

The tailwaters are stocked good now, most are catching their limit of trout. Power bait, worms or casting small spoons, rooster tails or small crankbaits can all put some on your stringer or in the live well.

Well, that’s it for this week. Enjoy the last part of this spring because summer is coming fast.
