Dropping a Line

Mathew Parish from Sapulpa, Okla., wanted to bring his wife, Jill, here in warmer weather but with a baby due in July they thought it best get here sooner. So we went out Friday before the cold front came in.

Jill’s big fish measured 33 inches. Not saying weight because I think my scales lie.

The water temp is still in the low 60s, which is good. Stripers and white bass are still full of eggs and the whispering as they roll next to you in water under 20 ft. deep can get your blood going. Seeing that big shad on top or chasing a top water plug can make your heart skip a beat. Sounds kinda like Love.

Here at Holiday Island look for whites and walleye from the Island to Houseman up the river. You will find the warmest water now in the creek arms. Go as far back as you can and you should catch some, along with some green bass and crappie. With water temps in the 60s, look for most all the fish to be in water less than 12 ft. deep.

On Beaver Lake we’re still going upriver into the White and War Eagle arms waiting on some fish over 40 inches or pounds if scales don’t lie. Big shad are the best bait now with big shiners and black salties catching. Green sunfish can even put a striper in the net.

Well, I better get ready to go back south. Got a trip tomorrow, so back chasing bait this afternoon.

Warm weather and spring rains are on the way. Watch the dogwood, then get out and catch some fish that day.
