Dropping a Line

Well, this week has been a cold one but it looks like we got a warmer week ahead for a nice weekend and that sun is up longer every day now. I stayed in and warm this last week but Lisa Mullins of Custom Adventures Guide Service, who guides for trout and whatever swims towards the tailwaters, dressed warm and look what she caught on a trout trip.

So them walleye are moving upstream now. They say they spawn on the full moon, but unlike the white bass, walleye don’t feed as well when they’re laying their eggs, but feed very heavy before and after.

Looks like March 20 will be their spawn this year, so the best time to catch these great eating fish between Holiday Island and Beaver Dam is from now on into April. With the water they’re releasing this year it’s looking like we will have one of our best walleye spawns in years.

As they move back towards the lake in April, the white bass will be moving into the same spots upriver to lay their eggs.

As for Beaver Lake, this last week they are still holding below 20 ft. deep in the main lake but the crappie fishermen upriver south of Hwy. 12 bridge have been catching crappie and striped bass mixed on crappie minnows in water less then 10 ft. deep.

Can you imagine catching a big striper on a crappie rod? Kinda like Lisa catching that big striper on a trout rod I reported last year. It also tells you that this is the time of year that stripers feed on that smaller bait.

I’m starting to get a lot of calls for trips March and April wanting to get in the books before my 10% discount ends March 1, but have no trips booked for February, so if I don’t get out this weekend to get you a good fish pic it’s about that time of year to post our spawning temps again, which starts with the walleye. It is also time for all to get that tackle ready for spring, whcih will be here in a blink of a eye.

Till next week stay warm by the fire or get outdoors with that sun and some fun.
