Dropping a Line

John Doorman from Edmond, Okla., with one of five stripers that were caught Monday fishing with Johnny Glantz. All were heavy fish, over 12 pounds, but the Hog that they fought for over 10 minutes before it broke off was the story of the day.

Stripers on Beaver Lake are still holding in the Hwy. 12 Prairie Creek area near Rogers, with surface activity still being seen when they do chase the bait to the top. These fish were caught with live bait down about 40 feet in 70 – 100 foot water in the middle of some big balls of bait.

We went out from here at the Island this week on Table Rock in search of warmer water and anything that would bite. Water temp here was 46° so we went all the way to Houseman Access to find some 51° water but no fish caught from there back to Beavertown.

Ready for some stable weather myself and for spring to come back. Crappie have moved deep and tight into the standing timber. If you catch one, there will be more. Bass are deep now and eating bigger bait so they don’t have to chase food all day. Best bet this time a year is a big brood shiner off the bottom sitting right on top of the fish or slowly moving.

As for me here at the Island, I’m done searching until the water starts warming back up in February and the walleye start to move. Striper bite is good so not giving up on them for this year yet myself.

Trout don’t mind the cold water so I suggest if you can’t go after stripers, grab a lawn chair, some worms along with some powerbait or mini marshmellows to float that worm off the bottom. Hopefully you will be frying trout for dinner.

Good Luck and dress warm.
