Dropping a Line

Chalk another one up for Johnny. The cold kept most in again, but Johnny Glantz got Russ Behnk and Tom Hoskinson from Haven, Kansas, out on Saturday, so here they are with their two best fish.

Water temps are still in the mid 50s and the top water bite is still hot. Stripers are being caught freelining live brood shiners, shad and black salties. Green perch can even put one in the boat.

Keep a big top water bait like a big Zara Spook or Chugger and another with something that you can swim fast under the surface like a swimbait. Watch for the birds and shut that outboard down before you spook them.

Been hearing good reports on the crappie and best way to catch is to slow down and go down 8 – 12 feet with a minnow or jig. Or both together. They are holding in tighter schools now, so when you catch one you should catch more. Same with the stripers schooling up as the baitballs get bigger.

Bass are still liking the shallows with the sun and the rocks with the shade. Walleye can usually be found off the flats here at the Island to Beaver, just start shallow and work down the edge where it drops into the river channel.

Looking like we have December coming in with more of the sun than November came in, so more will get out. The fish are fat, healthy and full of fight now, so enjoy that turkey for Thanksgiving and think about maybe having some fish for Christmas.
