Dropping a Line

Tom Roane from Alvord, Texas, caught a nice size striper last Saturday while taking a break from the War Eagle crowd. We had a nice day in the 60s with water temps running about 64°.

The fish were still wanting to stay down about 20 – 30 ft., which is a little strange since it’s time for more surface activity, but it’s here now. Wednesday was a different story for my buddy, Johnny, who tore them up as they busted the top all around his boat. I think maybe it took a while for the fish to get adjusted to the water cooling so fast and the fall turnover.

It’s time to watch the surface as well as your graph. Use lighter weights or no weights freelining live bait behind the boat, and keep a top water bait that will get some distance tied in for casting.

We’re still catching good fish on this end of the lake and also getting good reports of stripers being caught from Prairie Creek up river to Monte Ne.

Have not been out this week here at the Island but as with the stripers with the cooler water, the bass are hitting the top. Walleye are moving up on the flats and the crappie are enjoying the shoreline brush. Brown trout are spawning, so it’s a great time to get a line wet and enjoy the fall colors for fall has arrived in the Ozarks.
