Dropping a Line

Looks like we have a nice week for the War Eagle Craft fair and some good fishing, finally, with temps in the 60s and that cold front bringing the water temp to the lower 70s and upper 60s, also. The bite is on.

Not many went out on the water with that cold front this last weekend but it brought the fall and that is what we’ve been waiting for. Stripers are being caught up here near the dam to Point 5 with surface activity getting hotter every day.

Another guide I work with is also catching some good fish up the river south of Hwy. 12 bridge near Rogers.

Stripers feed more aggressive when the water temp runs above 48° and below 72°. After years of reporting, if you notice most our bigger fish have been caught in October, November and December. Then again March, April and May.

That’s because the water temp is just right so they can go where they want. Time to pull some weights off and see that big fish bust your bait on top. The same is good for all the bass species now, so top water is the trick.

Crappie have also moved closer to the shoreline brush so work a jig or minnow 6 – 8 ft. deep and you should find some. Walleye are on the edge of the flats here near the Island and Beaver town. In low light conditions don’t hesitate to run that bait up on the flat as shallow as 4 feet.

We are booked this Saturday, but open Thursday, Friday and Sunday if anyone wants a break from the crowd as the guy in the bottom right of this pic. Women are welcome, but if you prefer to shop more than him and he starts getting cranky just send him my way and I will get him off your nerves.

Enjoy the craft fair and drive safe, the traffic might be a little heavier then usual the next 4 days. Robert Johnson (479) 253-2258.
