Downtown is free game for fireworks

Aldermen Melissa Greene and Mickey Schneider asked council to vote for an amendment to the fireworks ordinance to omit historic downtown primarily to prevent the risk of fire. They said their constituents have asked for their homes and businesses to be spared from the explosives, but council voted them down.

Alderman Bob Thomas said that the fireworks rattled his windows but that was not enough to sway his vote to eliminate fireworks downtown.

There will be a mid-year budget meeting July 29, at 4:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. There was also a request from a resident to add funds into the sidewalk budget for both East Mountain and Pivot Rock Road due to the children and elders who wait for buses along the roadways.

  • Laura Lee Wilcox of 310 Spring St. opposes the decision by the city to allow a home-occupation of her neighbor at 304 Spring to put in a hair studio and to alter the exterior of the home. Wilcox said she is one of the six residents within 100 ft. of the applicant who has not received notification, and said that only one of the six said they received notification. She said she will appeal the city’s decision to approve the application and if need be, will consider legal action through the circuit court.
  • Aldermen unanimously approved the Strategic Alliance memorandum which was signed by Mayor Butch Berry. This is an agreement with the United States Small Business Administration and the City of Eureka Springs to help start, maintain, and expand small businesses. More information can be found at SBA.gov.

The next meeting is Monday, July 22, at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium.
