Council seeks role in apportioning Parks’ revenue

Alderman David Mitchell read a section from the Municipal League opinions which council had pored over at the May 29 meeting stating that council should have control of tax revenue even though, as in the case of the Lake Leatherwood City Park tax, revenue must be spent in compliance with language on the ballot. Mitchell proposed the question of whether Finance Director Lonnie Clark should be more administratively involved.

Mayor Butch Berry replied the LLCP tax revenue already goes into a dedicated account.

Mitchell repeated his question of whether Clark should oversee the line item. He claimed council does not get much financial reporting from Parks, and he wanted due diligence to what his reading of the Municipal League opinion clearly stated council should be doing.

Alderman Kristi Kendrick said this would hardly be the first time council has discussed lack of reporting from Parks, and that council should approve appropriating the tax revenue. “We need a more active role in administering tax revenue,” she insisted.

Council voted unanimously to have Clark and Parks Director Justin Huss at the next meeting for additional perspective.
