Compromise found on Washington Street parking

City alderman had before them a proposed ordinance Monday about removing some parking near the area where Point St. joins Washington St. The issue has been the narrow turn onto Point and the difficulty this would present to firefighters, but creating an easier turn for fire equipment by red-striping some of Washington would eliminate hard-to-find parking.

Mickey Schneider told council property owners in that neighborhood got together with Public Works Director Dwayne Allen, Fire Chief Nick Samac and Fire Marshal Jimmy Kelley to find a fair solution, and the ordinance before council was that compromise.

One section of the ordinance states, “No parking shall be allowed on the west side of Washington Street extending 82 feet from the corner of Summit to the center of the intersection with Point Street.” The ordinance also directs the mayor to red-stripe that section of curb.

Mayor Butch Berry explained Public Works would take care of signage and improvements to the turnaround on Point Street.

Vote to approve the first reading of Ord. 2268 was 5-0.
