Broadcasting meetings corrected

At Monday’s city council meeting alderman David Mitchell wanted to clear up a motion he made at the previous meeting regarding recording and broadcast of city meetings so that the council vote affirms what the city actually does.

Mayoral Assistant Kim Stryker explained city council meetings are broadcast live and recorded. The recordings receive closed-captioning, then posted on YouTube and broadcast on Cox Cable Channel 21 the following day. Also four commissions – HDC, CAPC, Planning and Parks – are broadcast live and recorded. The motion approved at the previous meeting stated all city meetings would be recorded and broadcast, but that was inaccurate because there are city meetings not being recorded.

Mitchell moved to amend his previous motion to state the city would proceed with its recordings and broadcasts as Stryker had described.

Kendrick stated it remained her position that televising city meetings encourages individuals to play to the camera and encourages citizens to stay home instead of going to meetings.

Vote on Mitchell’s motion was 5-1, Kendrick voting No.
