The Carroll County Airport Commission met May 15, and commissioners heard about current construction projects and future plans.
Commissioner Chase Tresler said concrete would be poured by the end of the following week for a new six-bay hangar, and construction should proceed quickly once the slab is in place. Consulting Engineer Joey Wallace said he has submitted grant applications on behalf of the commission to the Federal Aviation Administration. Wallace said the airport is on the FAA agenda for a $500,000 grant to build another six-bay hangar.
The commissioners discussed other possible future projects, and they considered how to make the best use of state and federal grants.
In other business:
- Airport Manager Mark Pepple said fuel sales have been steady.
- A hangar tenant owns a small jet, and he has received permission from the airport to install a tank for jet fuel next to the existing tank for aviation gas. The jet fuel will be available to other pilots and may encourage more small jets to use this airport. The tank is currently receiving a new liner that may be delivered by the beginning of June. Pepple said he could have a fuel delivery within a day after the tank is in place. Commissioners discussed adjustments to a ramp area to provide access to the new tank.
- The commission presented $500 scholarships to a student at each of the county’s three high schools.
- Termites have invaded part of the terminal building, requiring an immediate response. Some wood around a window has rotted, and the commission will seek a contractor to make repairs.
- In some places, the runway is as much as six inches higher than the adjoining grass. In most cases, this would not matter, but a pilot might have to leave the runway for some reason, and commissioners discussed cost-effective ways of addressing the situation.
