When trying to understand Trump’s success, we would do well to remember that his madly bombastic, bellicose ravings appeal to some American voters, presumably because they express the fundamentally backward-looking, racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic sentiments in those voters’, as we say, hearts and minds.
On the last day George W. Bush was in office about one-third of the voters surveyed approved of each and every thing he had ever done. Many of them are still living and planning to vote for a man who gives voice to their inner vulgarity.
