To experience the taste of soap, wash a dog

At last week’s meeting, Victor Smith asked advice from Planning commissioners on a business he’s pursuing, a self-serve pet wash on W. Van Buren. He did not want to proceed if the commission had serious objections. “This is just for discussion,” Smith said. “Before we go through the full review, I want to see how Planning feels.”

Smith plans to install a modular unit on a small lot. The property would include parking off the highway for several cars, with adequate turn-around space and sight lines for re-entering the highway. Contour of the land will require some excavation and filling, and the project also is contingent on a perc test for a septic tank.

The Barking Pines Pet Wash would serve “paw pets,” according to Smith. “But you can go in there and take a shower if you want.” He said the 24-hour service would offer different varieties of soap, flea treatments, blow driers, and more. Floor drains will accommodate large dogs, and tables would be available for smaller pets.

“This is only for discussion, but this sounds like a great idea,” Chair Ann Sallee said. The property is zoned C-2, and she said, “I can’t think of any reason why we wouldn’t vote for it.” Commissioner Woodie Acord agreed, and said, “I don’t think you’d have any problem with this commission.”

Commissioner Abbey Abbey expressed concerns about an additional drain on city water, although Smith explained that a 12-minute wash only takes six gallons of water.

The project would require cutting some trees, but Smith said he plans to preserve as many as possible. Sallee said a revised tree-cut ordinance should be in place by the time Smith formally applies to the commission.
