This Week’s Independent Thinker

Episcopalian Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde presided over an inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral in Washington last Tuesday and pleaded with Donald Trump to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” She was referring to those who were born somewhere else or who fell in love with someone others don’t approve of them falling in love with.

Because Bishop Budde asked us to treat others as we want to be treated, she was called an “uninspiring, nasty and not smart hater.” That came from the president. Anonymous social media posts wished her dead.

Conversation is always, always, always better than confrontation. Budde believes in God, Trump might or might not, but it is empowering to think there is a god who loves us so much that He put intelligent life here and on every other planet and in every dazzling galaxy.

Maybe we’ll learn to settle our differences before we stick a flag on Mars or Greenland and become the new immigrants.
