Hey, can you spell ABC?

The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., formed a spelling bee in 1925, and only stopped it twice, once during World War II and once for World War Covid.

In 2022, when Bruhat Soma was in fifth grade, he competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He tied for 163rd.

And then, there was last Thursday

In the national bee, a speller is allowed two-and-a-half minutes to spell one word. The speller can ask for definition, part of speech, use in a sentence, original language, alternate pronunciations, root of the word, and a repeat of the word.

Bruhat, a 12-year-old from Tampa, Fla., has a vermilion tika, the Hindu symbol of power and purity, on his forehead. He has memorized 80 percent of Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu sacred text.

This year, it was down to two spellers, so there was a spell off.

Bruhat correctly spelled 29 words in 90 seconds. Sciniph, puszta, mnyctalopia, nachschlage, etc.

He won a loving cup trophy, $50,000, and a reference library from Merriam-Webster.

This should be in the sports pages.
