The time to get married has changed

Does anyone remember the Eureka Springs Times-Echo in the late ‘90s? It’s when we all first worked together. Jeremiah was three and came to work every day.

There was one dreaded reporter’s job that had to be filed every Monday morning. It involved going to the courthouse and recording who applied for marriage licenses the previous week. Most couples were from Oklahoma, which required a blood test that Arkansas did not. Most licenses were issued on Saturdays.

That has come to an end. November 22 is the last Saturday to get a marriage license at the courthouse in Eureka Springs. The licenses will only be provided during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Whether due to the pandemic, no blood test requirement in neighboring states, fewer couples deciding that Saturday was the best day to get a hitching document or a national reduction in marriages, the cause for adjustment was necessary.

Carroll County Clerk Connie Doss said the slot at the courthouse to return licenses to be recorded will remain in place, and if your marriage is an emergency, she will be happy to assist because she does not want this to be a challenge for two people in love.
