Beaver Tailwaters

How about this weather! One day you’re basking in the sun, washing your boat and the next day, you have to anchor yourself to the ground to keep from getting blown away, and bring out the winter jacket!

Fishing conditions this past week have been a little challenging, however, we are still pulling fish. Let’s talk about the walleye first. We need the water temperatures to be around the 50° mark for those toothy critters to get active. We got close in February, but Mother Nature has had other ideas with the past few systems.

Right now, you need to have a slow presentation. The fish are scattered, and you need to follow the bait and work habitats. I expect the bite to pick up with warmer days.

The trout bite has been good, responding to various dough baits and soft plastics. The Corps has been flowing pretty steady, so drifting has been the preferred method, along with casting jigs. The water temperatures have been averaging 43° in the mornings, to 45° in the evenings, in the tailwaters. We are still waiting for the white bass to make an entrance. When they do, we will update! Remember to follow my Facebook page – Busch Mountain Fishing Guide Service – for weekly updates.

Striper fishing has been picking up this week, look on channel swings and deep treetops. The bait and fish have pushed down deeper, around 35 – 40 ft. down from the surface with the recent cold fronts coming through. Stripers have been moving a lot and not sticking around an area too long, so keep covering water and don’t be afraid to pick up and look in different areas of the lake. Crappie fishing has also picked up with the water warming up in the river arms. Look for them on flats and brush piles in 15 – 25 ft. of water. Water temps 44° to 47° depending where in the lake you decide to fish.
