Beaver Tailwaters report:

Once again, we were able to get out a couple times before this next batch of cold weather came in. I am really starting to dislike this reoccurring narrative! As I am writing this report, it is 52°. Yesterday, ice was forming on my face while fishing.

So, this week the Corps of Engineers opened the flood gates, while maintenance was being done on both generators. This had us changing up our approach to fishing.

We found drifting Pautzke fire worms along with fire minnows did really well. If you are able to find some good slack water, fire bait was the ticket. It seems the walleye have retreated back towards Beavertown, with more numbers being caught that way. Trolling has been the preferred method with the flowing water. Try to focus your baits in the 15 ft.-of-water range while trolling. Hopefully this flow will slow a bit, and fishing can be a little more manageable. I hope you all stay warm, here is to sunny days ahead!

Striper fishing has been picking up this week, look on channel swings and deep treetops. The bait and fish have pushed down deeper around 35 to 40 ft. down from the surface with the recent cold fronts coming through. Stripers have been moving a lot and not sticking around an area too long so keep covering water and don’t be afraid to pick up and look in different areas of the lake.

Crappie fishing has also picked up with the water warming up in the river arms. Look for them on flats and brush piles in 15 to 25 feet of water. Water temps 44° to 47° depending where in the lake you decide to fish.
