Takin’ it to the streets

Editor,

Welcome to DA (Divided America, formerly the United States of America)! The only thing missing is “US.” I wonder if this sorry state of national affairs is a result of a political system that ignores its own grassroots and begins at the county level, where the money game begins. Maybe if we started at City Hall the concept of “participatory democracy” it might eventually work its way into our government, from bottom to top.

Eureka Springs’s city government values tourism profits over the quality of residents’ lives. Until Eurekans organize their own Residents’ Party, the de-facto Business Party will continue to loot Eureka and rob its residents. But I don’t see that happening. Therefore, after over a half century of voting, I’ve had enough of this game.

I don’t think you’ll ever see me in church again on election day. “Voting for the lesser of two evils” is a cynical scam that capitalists and religious fanatics use to maintain their stranglehold on America.

Unfortunately, revolutions have a bad habit of devouring their young. But… what else is left?

This country was launched by exterminating its native population. Then it colonized less well-armed societies. Now, we’ve come full circle and the only suckers left to exploit are our own people. That’s how we ended up spending half of the money you pay in taxes on the military-industrial complex.

Enough! IWW organizer Joe Hill’s last words are as timely today as they were on the day he was executed by a firing squad, “Don’t Mourn! Organize!”
