Stolen election residue

If anyone had any doubt that the current Republican administration is crazed, consider the government’s decision in the Ashli Babbitt case, the only the Jan. 6 rioter killed by police.

On that infamous day, Ashli Babbitt was on the leading edge of the violent MAGA mob when she tried to climb through the smashed-out window of a barricaded door leading to the House of Representatives Chamber.  The few Capitol police there were the last defense for the cowering Congress members gathered in the chamber.  She was shot and killed by one of the police (who was later exonerated of any crime).

Babbitt’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit that the government recently settled for nearly $5 million. In addition, the Air Force offered to provide Military Funeral Honors for Ms. Babbitt, a veteran.  Trump claimed it was “a disgrace” that she was shot, as she was “just innocently standing there.”

Trump has consistently attempted to rewrite the story of the Jan. 6 attacks (which the FBI classified as domestic terrorism), calling it instead a legitimate protest, “a day of love.”

And of course, Trump has not expressed similar compassion for the 140 officers injured in the Jan. 6 coup attempt or for the family of the officer who died the next day, along with the four officers who committed suicide since then.

Rather, he pardoned the nearly 1,600 rioters, including 172 who had already pled guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers that day.

As a result of Trump’s debunked claim (which he still spouts today) that the 2020 election was stolen from him, the blood of Ashli Babbitt and the others is on his hands.
