Shaping Character

403

Hello, my name is Garrett Rascon, and I attended Clear Spring School for several years, from approximately 2014 to 2022. My journey at Clear Spring School began when I left a previous school that had treated my family and me poorly.

At the time, my mother was facing numerous challenges, and handling both those issues and me simultaneously was overwhelming for her. I joined Clear Spring School with a mindset that was focused on something other than learning—seeking refuge.

On my arrival, the remarkable patience and guidance shown by the teachers stood out. They not only helped me academically, but also played a crucial role in my emotional and mental healing. Looking back, Clear Spring School had a transformative impact on me, shaping the person I am today. The institution took a holistic approach, analyzing the whole person rather than merely focusing on academic input.

During classes, my struggles with attention and emotional challenges were apparent. Instead of overlooking these issues, the teachers took the time to understand and address them. They didn’t rush through lessons but actively supported me in overcoming personal obstacles. Their patience and consideration were instrumental in my progress.

Clear Spring School nurtured my academic growth and significantly contributed to my social development. The open and inclusive environment allowed me to connect with a diverse range of people. This experience influenced my ability to socialize and connect with others, a skill I carry with me to this day. The school’s emphasis on community over cliques created an atmosphere where individuals felt free to express themselves.

Reflecting on my time at Clear Spring School, I cherish my freedom there. The diverse community fostered an environment where different perspectives coexisted, and friendships were formed organically. Even today, I credit Clear Spring School for my ease in approaching new people and engaging in meaningful conversations based on shared interests.

Now engaged in computer science, I attribute my problem-solving skills to the hands-on learning approach at Clear Spring School. The emphasis on critical thinking taught me not only how to solve problems, but also how to identify and define them. These skills have proven invaluable in my current field.

While specific memories may have faded over time, the core takeaways from Clear Spring School remain vivid. The ability to approach challenges with a broad perspective and adaptability is something I continue to value. One of my fondest memories is of all of us going to ESSA [Eureka Springs School of the Arts] for some time together, and we all had our own little classes. I did clay work at one point, and I remember going to the bank to display our work. The school’s commitment to nontraditional learning experiences, such as field trips and hands-on projects, left a lasting impression on me. After leaving Clear Spring School, I returned to contribute by teaching computer science.

Currently, I have been accepted into Oral Roberts University to study game development. The prospect of this significant change is both nerve-racking and exciting. However, I feel well-prepared thanks to Clear Spring School’s teachings on adaptation and resilience.

I have also been fortunate to receive a substantial scholarship from Oral Roberts University, which has enhanced my excitement for this new chapter. Although I don’t speak any foreign languages, I plan to study Spanish at the university.

Regarding volunteer work, I am actively involved in serving at my church every Sunday. I fondly remember engaging in volunteer activities at Clear Spring, such as Trashathon, and participating in the travel program that allowed me to explore various places.

In essence, Clear Spring School provided me with an education and shaped my character, instilling qualities that have been instrumental in my personal and academic journey. As I embark on the next chapter at Oral Roberts University, I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned at Clear Spring School.

Clear Spring School is proud to announce that after being featured in the Eureka springs Independent, this story, along with many others from alumni, parents, teachers, and staff, will be included in our Fiftieth Anniversary Anthology, The Miracle in the Woods, set to be released in October 2024.
