Jim Ross took a narrow victory over Alan Hoos in a run-off election to determine the Republican candidate for sheriff. With 1,061 votes cast, Ross won by 23 votes, 542 to 519.

After the results were announced, Ross told the Independent he was grateful for the support of voters. “I expected a close race against a candidate as strong as Alan,” he said. Ross said he would “take it easy” for a few days before “getting ready for the long haul.”

As he looks forward to the general election in November, Ross said he would continue to work at meeting people and reaching out to voters in Carroll County.

In the county, Donald Ragland squeaked by Keith Slape by one, 42-41, to be Republican candidate for state representative, although Ragland took the state contest by 44 votes. Nick Samac lost 38-32 to Jeffery B. Usrey for Constable, Polo Township.

Results unofficial until certified next week.
