Plastic bags have their place

Eureka Springs is a pet-friendly tourist town, alderman Melissa Greene said at Monday’s city council meeting, and it should have handy plastic bag dispensers at sites around town for fast and easy cleanup of pet souvenirs. She said it would be a welcoming, friendly thing for the town to station beside trashcans.

Mayor Butch Berry said the parks have bag dispensers already, so it would be a matter of positioning some downtown, and purchasing dispensers and bags would need to be part of an upcoming budget discussion. Alderman Kristi Kendrick suggested local merchants could take on this responsibility since the city budget was so tight.

Greene insisted it would not be a huge outlay for the city, maybe $250 each for four bag dispensers plus a supply of bags. She moved for the city to purchase four dispensers at a maximum of $1000.

Vote was deferred until the four sites are identified.
