Planning should maintain status quo

Editor,

City Council is considering changing the number of members on the Planning Commission from seven to five due to difficulty in maintaining a quorum.

The Planning Commission is where we go to get permission to build a house, cut a tree, get a CUP, put up a fence, or rezone property.

Planning commissioners also serve on the Board of Zoning Adjustment where one would appeal decisions by the city regarding enforcement, denial of permits, variances to lot size, setbacks and the like.

Council should not reduce the number of commissioners to five.

I believe that something as important as property rights’ decisions should be made by the current number of commissioners, seven, in spite of the difficulty of citizens’ reluctance to serve. More, varied, opinions make these important decisions more fair.

Contact your council persons and make your views known before the next council meeting Monday, March 25.

This is also a good opportunity for you to serve your city in an important and challenging way by asking to be on the Planning Commission.
