Parks workshop goes over future agenda

The Parks Commission’s Feb. 2 workshop began discussion on agenda items for their regular meeting scheduled for Feb. 16. Interim-Director Scott Miskiel said that Parks by-laws required rules and regulations be approved by commissioners and asked if any had changes or comments before the next meeting.

Chair Kevin Ruehle said that when it came to the prohibiting of motorized vehicles, that pedal assisted and non-throttle e-bikes be excluded. He wasn’t sure as to the classification of e-bikes but Miskiel said he would look into it, and limit speed within Leatherwood to 20 mph.

Miskiel also brought up the prohibiting of remote-controlled aircraft and asked if commissioners would want to see drones included, which they will be.

A grant from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program to fund repair of retaining walls at Basin Park is being prepared, and a second grant will be filed for the stonework under the fountain.

  • Commissioners discussed hiring procedures due to needing one or two shuttle drivers in the near future, bait shop employees, and a groundskeeper. Miskiel said he would post job listings on the Park’s website and social media.
  • Miskiel gave an update on the greenhouse at the Community Center saying ESCC offered that in lieu of rent, Parks provides classes from Feb. – May and give some plants to the center for their use. He said that he felt it was worth the exchange and Ruehle said to put the item on the agenda
  • Ruehle said that Parks was not responsible for the Fat Tire Festival but they would be happy to be involved with its planning.
  • Miskiel said fees related to the new Parks rules and regulations that are to be reviewed at the next regular meeting would be given to commissioners prior to the meeting.

The next regular meeting will be on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Aud.

  1. Jeremiah, unless council officially changed its name, the body you are reporting on is still named the Parks and Recreation Commission. Under Featherstone, they ignored providing recreational opportunities for mere residents and spent all their money on pretty parks for tourists. Please don’t help rebrand Parks and Recreation as just Parks. Thanks, Vernon Tucker
