Oligarchy: Government in which power is invested in a few

Editor,

Although unusual and even somewhat shocking, there is one oligarch who often speaks truthfully in public: home-grown billionaire Warren Buffett. To quote him: “Sure there is a class war, and it’s my class, the rich, who are making it and we are winning.”

Oh, how well they are winning! It is very possible that the coming elections will determine whether our terminally ill democracy will even survive them. In the coming primary, one candidate stands apart from the crowd, with a 40-year perfect record of support for the working classes: of course, Bernie Sanders, the democratic socialist.

Because the oligarchs, our class enemies, own all the mass media, his socialist ideas will be attacked ruthlessly, because socialism – whose virtues include Social Security, Medicare for All, unions, right of assembly, free roadways, mass transit, free education, clean water and air, sustainable agriculture, food stamps, etc. – is our true shelter.

It is the working classes who have actually built, with their hands and brains, the richest and most powerful country this world has ever seen. But the oligarchs will stop at nothing to destroy Bernie’s candidacy (and our precarious lifestyle) and keep all the spoils for themselves (Bernie is the only presidential candidate in modern history to have no help from Big Business).

All we have left to fight with is our vote, and, if necessary (like we hear about in so many other countries now), our bodies in the streets.
