Metal carport roofs get HDC OK

The Historic District Commission had tabled discussion of a wooden carport with a metal roof at its last meeting. On Sept. 3, the HDC returned to that topic, and granted approval for the project.

Robert Frazier, at 15 E. Mountain Dr., had asked to build a carport 20×16 ft. At the Aug. 20 HDC meeting, commissioners said Frazier’s application did not have an adequate site plan and included conflicting measurements for the proposed carport.

In returning to the application, commissioners asked about painting the exposed wood on the carport. Frazier will have to submit another application for the painting, although that application will only require administrative approval from Cassie Dishman, director of Planning and Community Development. All approved the application.

Another carport question came from Thomas Mischo, at 4 Oakridge Dr. Mischo asked to build a cedar carport 12×24 ft. He also proposed a shed 10×10 ft. behind the carport. The property dates to 1976 and is considered non-contributing.

In response to a question, Mischo said he chose the tin roof because it would cost less than an asphalt shingle roof. The house has asphalt shingles, and Mischo said the dark brown metal will look similar in color to the house roof. All approved the application.
