A Spring Street shooting at about 10 p.m. last Friday, March 1, left Christopher Vanschoick, 36, dead, according to Eureka Springs Police Chief Billy Floyd.

An Arkansas State Police statement released on March 2 said that Vanschoick had brandished a handgun during an altercation at the Rowdy Beaver Den. A bartender called 911 and two Eureka Springs police officers responded.

The officers located Vanschoick sitting in his vehicle on Spring St. According to the ASP statement, the officers approached the vehicle, a struggle ensued, and Vanschoick produced a handgun. One of the officers fired his weapon striking Vanschoick, who was pronounced dead by the Carroll County coroner.

His body was transferred to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the cause and manner of death.

Carroll County Prosecuting Attorney Tony Rogers said he will evaluate evidence collected from the ASP, other physical evidence, and witness testimonies to determine whether the use of deadly force was consistent with state law and if any charges will be filed.

Eureka Springs Police Chief Billy Floyd said he is unable to release names of the officers involved until he hears from ASP investigators.

“All I can say right now is that I’m grateful for the outpouring of support from this community, especially from those who knew any of those involved,” Floyd said.
