Lichen or not

Editor,

There are two sides to issues and actions.

The May 4, 2022 issue of the ES Independent had a notice on page 4, “Polishing headstones to a fine sheen,” to remove lichen, fungus and grime.

I have studied lichens and contributed to finding new species for my county and state, Adams County, Ohio.

Some lichen species are best found on certain rock varieties used as headstones. I often visited the older cemeteries in my area.

I once considered developing a lichen nature trail in a local cemetery. I didn’t do so for concern about vandalism and killing of the lichens.

The Sixth Extinction we are currently in is of concern to me. All species are important. Unnecessary killing needs to be reduced.

We are free to make choices but not free from the consequences.
